In reality it's both. The law would prescribe for him to be executed if convicted of treason. If a US citizen joins another force to fight against us, and wages war or provides material support, they are guilty of treason. Awlaki was alleged to have joined Al Qaeda. Therefore he was killed for treason, hence executed.

However, we have to back up a step because he was not tried or convicted, so it cannot possibly be an execution. Since it was a secret, targeted, and deliberate attack, for the sole purpose of killing him, we can call the operation which killed Awlaki an assassination. That's how it evolves if you can try and hold those two concepts in your head at the same time.
