Yes, the goal differential is important in group play in case of any tie in points based on wins, ties, losses.
Japan is rebuilding their team they aren't strong contenders this year. Covid adds some uncertainty but on paper this is a strong team for Canada this year.

U.S. women's soccer team played Australia to a 0:0 draw earlier today.
The U.S. is ranked second in Group G with 4 points and a +2 Goal Differential.
The U.S. women's soccer team will play the Netherlands at 7 a.m. ET on Friday -- now that they have advanced from Group play.
They have the most talented players but they have not played together enough recently.... after 3 games I believe they are now hitting their stride and should make a good run to the Finals.
