I'm a softie for happy endings, so it was great news to learn that the South Florida Tea Party will receive a bailout for whining beyond its means.
I had been concerned that the Tea Partyers unpaid bill for Boca Raton's services would become a socialized debt to the city.
That would have sent the wrong message.
After all, the April gathering at Sanborn Square was all about how taxes are too high because spending is excessive. So it would have been a disappointing final chapter of the day if the taxpayers in Boca had to foot the unpaid bill for cops and barricades because the Tea Party group ran up expenses it couldn't pay for its anti-spending rally.
Instead, Donald Trump, who had been the pretend-presidential candidate who headlined the rally, agreed to pay the $6,000 bill to the city.
"Mr. Trump is honored that so many people came to hear him speak on important political and social issues," his advisor Michael Cohen told Politico. "Mr. Trump does not want any citizen group to be disparaged or burdened for exercising their first amendment right and has agreed to personally cover the full obligation to the City of Boca Raton."
South Florida Tea Party Chairman Everett Wilkinson optimistically estimated the crowd at the rally at more than 2,000. But Trump's statement this week put the "unexpectedly large number of citizens" at the rally at more than 5,000 people.
My guess is that by the time a retelling of the day makes it into the next Trump autobiography (Suggested title: I Really Could Have Been President), the Boca crowd will have swelled to 20,000.
As for the "important political and social issues" Trump spoke about on that day, well, I confess, I'm stumped.
I was there. He spent a lot of time questioning Barack Obama's citizenship (pure nonsense) and talking crazy (seizing Middle East oil) as he rambled on about what he'd do once he was elected president - which was not the job he was really angling for.
It appears that Trump's game was using a lot of simpletons to boost his status as a reality TV star.
Forget Washington and Jefferson. He was trying to follow in the footsteps of Snooki and the Kardashians.
