Before I reply to riskarbs egregiously mean-spirited reply, let's start with facts: Japanese suffer far less from obesity than Euros, have far lower risk of heart attack or stroke, resist disease far better--numerous studies show markedly higher recovery rates from various diseases--and have far higher life expectancy. Riskarb's choosing Sweden as representative of Euros' life expectancy shows his desperation: what is Sweden's population, like 5MM? I'm sure--if I looked very hard--I could find some remote, tiny Japanese village somewhere with life expectancy of 88. And, a 3 year difference between Germans and Japanese--given populations of over 100 millions--necessarily means the difference is significant. That 100 million Japanese living on average 3 years longer than 100 million Germans is due to chance is more than 100's of millions to 1.
Mean-spirited posts aside, my point is clear: my ease and success in living healthfully doesn't mean anyone can live healthfully. For me, shunning alcohol is easy, as I don't crave alcohol. Telling an Irishman or an Indian to stop drinking, just because I don't drink, shows ignorance. Heroin addicts shooting up is to me unimaginable, incomprehensible, and unthinkable. Clearly, though, addicts have reasons. Shunning alcohol, dairy, fat is for me very easy; for a Euro, the same would be difficult and painful.
