{"s" : "elnk","k" : "c10,l10,p20,t10","o" : "","j" : ""} Mindspring, Atari, Commodore 64, TRS 80's, Protege, and EarthLink - all these products and companies were born during the initial years of the PC and public internet. I remember using a giant VAX computer in my initial years at college in computer science in 1989. It was so large, taking up an entire glassed off room in the computer lab.

Little did I realize that in a few short years, personal PC's and the internet would become ultra wide spread, affordable and indispensable tools for almost everyone. It was the network known as the World Wide Web or WWW and Moore's law of shrinking yet ever powerful processors that served as the impetus for the extreme growth path of the personal PC.

One of the companies on the cutting edge of the internet's initial explosive growth curve is our PowerRating Stock Spotlight today: EarthLink (NasdaqGS:ELNK - News). The company earned a 4 Long Term PowerRating which places it near the top of the ranked low priced (under $10.00) stocks.

For those of you not familiar with our Long Term PowerRatings, it is an easy to use, dynamic stock picking tool based on 13 years of extensive, statistically significant studies, across most market environments. Our research has clearly shown that stocks that earn a 10 rating have an 81% chance of being higher one year later. Those possessing a 9 rating have a 79.1% chance of trading higher one year later. In this volatile, uncertain market environment, allow Long Term PowerRatings to assist you in building a profitable and safe portfolio.

EarthLink was founded in 1994 by visionary pioneer, Sky Dayton. Around the same time, a company named MindSpring was launched by Charles Brewer in Atlanta. EarthLink quickly joined forces with Netscape and started to distribute Netscape's Navigator software to the public. Soon afterwards, EarthLink blew the competition wide open by being the first to offer flat rate internet access in 98 US cities.

In 1997, EarthLink went public and soon afterward launched DSL service in several metropolitan areas. MindSpring was growing right along with EarthLink and in 2000 the 2 companies merged creating the world's largest internet service provider or ISP. The company has continued to grow and expand its offering into wireless handheld devices among other innovations. The latest creations are free standing DSL and the Helio mobile phone network.

This company is one of the few that has survived the internet stock boom and bust while still maintaining the core business. EarthLink is based in Atlanta, GA and employs about 1000 people. 2008 was very good for the company with a 66% increase in adjusted EBITDA over 2007, EPS of 0.25 cents and free cash flow of $70.1 million. However, Revenues were down due to the company's change of focus on tenured and more profitable subscribers. Technically, price has bounced off of a March 9th low and is climbing toward the next resistance level at the 50-day SMA currently at $6.81/share. The stock seems to be forming another base at the $6.40/level and may be setting up for the next push upward.
