I made grad school MBA tuition on Black monday in 1987, and this situation is not the same as back then. . .
this pattern is a slower version of the long term capital management implosion, where there are underpinning weaknesses which are being slowly absorbed in an orderly fashion.
An external market shock which would result in an 87 or 02 like steep descent would be a bond insurer blowup, or something on the order of a large financial insurer going backrupt.
That shock would mean that partial recovery of the losses by the banks and financial institutions would be greatly reduced, and financial institution capital risk would increase again.
