These are NOT conservatives DP. This is NOT a red state. This IS a problem.

Let's pick a direction. Let in everyone and get rid of all social welfare. Hey, this is America, the land of opportunity right? Afterall, our ancestors came here with nothing and worked their way up.

Or, we don't let them in and take care of the millions upon millions upon millions of EXISTING American children and adults who have no food, no shelter, no eduction and are destitute. It seems ludicrous to me that we are providing for illegals that which we won't even provide for American children. Unless of course this is just a political ruse....

What about all the billions you mentioned that are given privately?

What has always made America unusual, though not unique, is the opportunity, not the welfare. What say we overturn Buckley v Valeo and treat ourselves to a Congress that isn't on the dole? Perhaps -- just perhaps -- they might adhere just a little bit more to the principles on which this country was founded.

But probably not.

Most people, at least according to the polls, will acknowledge that Obama is wildly incompetent. But this discussion we've been having has been about how and why to organize a society a certain way, not about Obama (please, not again).

The problem is not Democrat or Republican or even the government itself. The problem is that we can't decide just what it is we want as a people, which is one reason why the schools have been fucked for so long and why they get progressively (no pun intended) worse with each passing year.

No, this is not about Obama. This is about 30 million black people that would like you to ask you, DP, why money that should be allocated towards their problems is instead going to illegals? These same black people would like to ask you, DP, why we throw THEM in prison for breaking the law and embrace the illegal who breaks the law. What do you want to tell them?

Speaking of funds and their allocation:

Cost Of Military Jet Could House Every Homeless Person In U.S. With $600,000 Home more . . .

These examples are of course silly. For one, we can say that about anything in our budget. Shit DP, we spend 100 million researching the sexual behavior of spring chickens. With tax payer money!

On a more serious note, that jet was not built in a vacuum. That jet was built in the US by American workers and paid a pretty damn good salary. Now, we could stop making that jet, and we probably should, we could lay off all the union guys that built that plane, service that plane, fly that plane, etc. We could take those jobs away, tell those people we're sorry they can't pay their mortgage now or put food on their tables for their family. They can just be added to the list of displaced workers that we can't find a home for. Oh and DP, when we do that, that money will not go to the homeless, no when we kill those jobs, take that money and use it to expand some worthless gov't agency that will try to help those unfortunate defense workers who suddenly find themselves out of work. And round and round we go. Look ma, no hands!

They seemed to think it was about Obama. Nonetheless, yet again the quandary is why and how one wants to organize a society. Why indeed should they be thrown into prison for something that illegals get away with? Why indeed should money that should go to them go instead to illegals? These are questions with which one must grapple. Unfortunately we become so embroiled in hatred and intolerance and bigotry that little to nothing gets accomplished.

Not that I have any particular agenda. I don't see things changing much except to get worse. Much worse. But then I have my own life to live and I do the best I can with it.

Martin, capitalists and socialists of high net worth are one and the same. Very much like Wall Street. When the call options are in the money, they are capitalists. When they expire worthless, suddenly they are socialists. Martin, people become what they need to become to survive. That hasn't changed in thousands of years. If you want to make this red state/blue state it's your prerogative.
I am not making this anything, since I didn't start using the "left/right" terminology. I used it in response. In general, I sorta agree with this, although I think if you keep track of what people say, you should be able to tell whether they're consistent.
To be fair Martin, let me be a little more clear about where I'm coming from here. I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories. I don't think "anyone" is behind the curtain so to speak. Instead what I believe happens is, people of means take advantage of what is presented to them. The Fed does what they do. And the uber rich exploit that. The Uber rich exploit government. They exploit loopholes. They exploit information. It's what they do. It's what they always have done. There doesn't need to be any secret handshakes or membership of the freemasonry.
Yes, I agree with this wholeheartedly, hence my suggestion regarding the tax code.
This is precisely why I believe the best solution is to make sure they have nothing to exploit. It's why I prefer gov't small. It's why I prefer the Fed to be seen and not heard. It's why I think "too big to fail" is bullshit. I always find it odd that the political left wants to empower gov't then acts shocked when a starving artist from Austria takes that power and runs with it. You be careful Martin feeding those cute small wild animals. When they get big enough, they seem to conveniently forget who fed them. They don't bite the hand that feeds them Martin. They eat them. It's in their nature.
Firstly, again, I am not sure why you're addressing me personally as if I belong to the "political left". Secondly, of course, I am familiar with the example you're offering here (Godwin's Law always triumphs, it seems), but I could say something very similar about the peculiar insistence of the "political right" on the central bank issue. My personal opinion is that everything is good in moderation and it's always a balancing act between the two extremes. Where that balance lies is a matter of judgement and there's bound to be disagreements, such as the one we're discussing.
Can you imagine if the Fed would pump trillions into our education system vs the banking system. The irony here of course is one of the stated goals now of the Fed is the employment rate. And they are pumping trillions into debt to keep rates low when all they need to do is spend a few billion and they could probably cut the unemployment rate in half. How do you like dem apples?
Well, all you need is to get Congress to change the Fed's mandate and they'll be able to do this, I'm sure...

Martin, I find when I speaking to someone it's easier to speak to "them" then to speak to them but refer to the overall populace. Makes communication a bit easier don't ya think?

Martin, you talk about changing this and changing that, having balance, holding hands, blah, blah, blah. Next thing you are going to tell me is that it depends on what the meaning of "is" is (Clinton reference). You are a natural politician Martin. LOL. Why don't you specifically state how you would go about solving the problems. And again, I'm referring to you because it's easier to have a dialogue with a person vs the general population. :)
