The Soviet Union dissolved without a shot, so why the current violence ?

The only reason that I can think of is that everyone knew that the Soviet Union was an evil empire, and had to be destroyed as soon as possible. Kind of counter intuitive. The evil empire dissolves without a shot, but the Russian Federation, intent on maintaining it's influence is another story.

The Soviet Union collapsed under it's own weight. In the Ukraine, you've got two powerful sides (East and West) pushing for control. There's a significant difference.
