Too simplistic. Did today's billionaires invent the monetary system? If we didn't live in a cooperative society there would be no wealth; we'd still be cavemen.
People in positions of advantage can play the system and reap disproportionate benefits from the social cooperative. When a significant minority of people are excluded from opportunity they have nothing to lose by resorting to criminality and anarchy - except their miserable lives.
The other option is to leave and go to another location. If a state is so wealth disproportionate, then it citzens can leave and go to another location where oportunity still exists. Opportunity is closing up in the states. It is turning more into a feudal state where as where and what family you are born into will determine what type of life you will lead. Nothing has changed in the last 6000+ years of humanity, nor will it ever.

Peil, your remarks make no sense whatsoever. You're not stupid. You must realize that disparity in income has virtually nothing to do with who works hard and who doesn't, but rather with the choices we make as individuals and which activities are compensated to a greater extent and which to a lesser. Supply and demand, and external factors such as collective bargaining, lobbying, political and trade group influence, etc. enter into the picture as well. These latter factors are largely beyond an individual's power to control regardless of how hard one works.
Throughout history there has always been lazy people and industrious people.

Yes, when discussing the political structure of the U.S. Federal Government, the word democracy belongs either in quotations or as a historical footnote. We have never elected a President democratically, and now with the advent of safe House districts (a Tom Delay initiative) the House of Representatives is becoming increasingly less democratic. And , of course, the pervading influence of corporate money in both houses makes true democracy in our Federal congress a distant memory.
I used to chuckle whenever George Bush the younger started prattling about bringing democracy to Iraq. I thought he should try it out at home first to see if he liked it.
Poverty in the United states hides under a veil. As long as subsidies are distributed (including pensions), you don't know who is well off or poor. In fact, more likely you think a poor guy is wealthy by the way he talks up his game. History says that the poor is exposed when the ponzi cracks which is always the middle class who think they have wealth but don't.
