The radical moral implications of luck in human life

The article is pathetic. No one owes anyone equal opportunity. You eat what you kill. I know plenty of first generation Canadians who came here without much and most now have either well paying 100k+ a year jobs or a business. They had no connections and didnt speak english when they came here. Most had to deliver pizza or work dirty manual labour jobs while supporting families to get started. Vox is a garbage leftist media publication. The message is terrible for young people starting life right now. Instead of looking for solutions, they just look for places to blame.

It's nice to ascribe a belief to those not in your tribe that they don't actually hold. That makes it much easier to feel superior to those idiots on the other side, after all just look at that stupid thing they believe in. No one in this thread has said that anyone is owed equal opportunity, although if you're anti opportunity one would think you would need to justify that as opposed to just bringing up an example of those who succeeded despite it. (There were plenty of slaves who manages to escape to freedom and have success, therefore no one owed those slaves anything, am I right?)

What we have said is that luck, starting with where you're born and how smart you're born, is a huge factor in sucesss and you're an arrogant a-hole if you don't grasp this and think your "hard work" is what separates you from all the lazy losers who happen to have been born with below average IQ in a shitty place. Do you disagree with that?

I fully support the idea that luck has a lot to do with the outcomes in your life but my conclusions from this idea are very different then the implications of the article.

If you need luck to succeed then you must try as many times as you can...keep spining the wheel of fortune until it hits your name. Sure, you can spend your entire life trying and not get anywhere, but life, nature, and existence is not fair nor does it need to be. Other then basic rights and freedom's, nobody owes you anything in this life.

To me the conclusion of the author's view point is that the lucky ones owe something to the less fortunate and that they need to feel some sort of guilt for their success because it was just because of luck and not because of hard work.

Look, I went to a pretty left leaning university. I used to think like the author before. Luckily, I changed my world view over the last 5 years. I am so "lucky" that I did. I wish I didnt spend my early 20's thinking the way I used to.

I changed my worldview after actually living around the country and interacting with hard working folks much less fortunate than me. ok so what you doing with your luck to help the unlucky?? You could get out your checkbook and start writing some checks out to some “unlucky” ET’ers. I am sure they would supply some valid addresses if you keep it discreet and not make it a bragging point. Empathy is one thing. Actually doing something is another thing.....see you could actually “spread” some of that trading luck around!

There are some points covered in the article that I would agree with, but in general it appears to come across as lefty virtue signalling twaddle.

As an example, a white caucasian couple (male and female) plan to have a child. The couple are both educated, wealthy and reside in a sought after location close to where their educated, wealthy parents live (Cali suburb). Which child are they most likely to have?

A) A black African child, born into poverty, malnourished with no prospects etc etc?

or

B) A white American child, healthy with all the trimmings?

There is no luck or fortune involved in this situation, it's another lefty attempt at beating the conscience to a pulp, because that's where they get their kicks. Build the wall!
