The Opening Orders Thread

Well, with the Redi AddIn for Excel, we simply take snapshots every 5 seconds for the first 5 minutes (or longer). This helps when researching which stocks to use in the opening, real time. DDE link. I would suppose that other programs with DDE to Excel should work as well.

Where to get the "Redi Addin"? Is it automattically installed by eSignal or do I need to purchase it?

No, you need to use the Goldman Sachs trading platform (www.redi.com) - which entitles you to a DDE link for all the data required. Then you link it to Excel, works great.

I was just thinking that whoever you trade with might enable a DDE link that would work in a similar fashion.

After the syntax assist from DodgerFan, and Mr. B, I reworked my Excel spreadsheet layout and formulas to update directly from esignal data manager.

SigTools DDE can capture data on a time interval basis during trading hours...

i have to give tradenyse for help with open nyse formula. as for hi lo of the first 3 min. one can probably set esig charts to 3 min bar. as for filtering it for nyse, you need to talk to esig help.

Mr. Bright,

Firstly, let me say thanks for all of your posts and for taking the time to answer several of my questions in the past.

I have read your posts for years now and feel that I am a better trader as a result. After several tries since I was 16 back in 1984 I am finally becoming profitable on a daily and consistent basis.
My first question is:
I tried to short RIO today and was told by tradestation that its a "Threshold Securities List" and can not be shorted. I called tradestation but was only told that its not on the easy to short list. It appears that there is "2" lists. the easy to short and then the Threshold list. What is that and are there any solutions to shorting stocks on that list??

My second question has more to do with going pro.
What would you say is minimum amount of capital that someone should have to work with if they wanted to trade full time?

Thanks again

Well thanks, always nice to hear!
Yes, some stocks are "hard to borrow" - and have to "located" by the Clearing Firm. Our traders who consistently trade these stocks, place an ongoing request for permission to short, enter a code into their Redi machine, and then can short just like any other stock. Goldman Sachs has an excellent shortable list, but on a rare occasion, we may not be able to locate something, but very rarely. Your group may or may not have access to this locate feature, you should certainly ask.

Our traders come in with between $15K-$100K, with the average probably about $20K for new people and $50K-$75K for long term seasoned traders from the trading floor or other Firms.

Hope this helps,

Don

Legal Stuff (changing October 15)
As defined in Rule 203(c)(6) of Regulation SHO, a “threshold security” is any equity security of any issuer that is registered under Section 12 of the Exchange Act, or that is required to file reports under Section 15(d) of the Exchange Act (commonly referred to as reporting securities), where, for five consecutive settlement days:
There are aggregate fails to deliver at a registered clearing agency of 10,000 shares or more per security;

The level of fails is equal to at least one-half of one percent of the issuer’s total shares outstanding; and

The security is included on a list published by a self-regulatory organization (SRO).
A security ceases to be a threshold security if it does not exceed the specified level of fails for five consecutive settlement days.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has amended Regulation SHO to eliminate the “grandfather provision” effective October 15, 2007. Please refer to Regulatory Alert #2007-086 for complete details.

And, this might get placed in Stocks and Commodities, do you mind? I'm never sure what they're going to publish, but these may be of interest.

Where can I read more about what you are doing here?

Do a search on "Don's Openings" under "thread titles" and select "show results as threads".

1 short, 1 long, both small wins, +295.

Can the Steelers go to 4-0 with a win at Arizona? Tune in Sunday to find out...
