$1 Billion over the next decade is very telling about "getting away from oil" anytime soon....
 
If we continue to import 70% of our oil, and if oil averages $60/bbl over the next decade, we'll pay about $4 Trillion for it.

"$1 Billion over a decade"? Chump change.
 
Considering oil is hedged perfectly against the dollar....notice how oil goes up when the dollar declines....

Considering the dollar issue ...."holding its position"....for the next ten years ....

Is a very sketchy proposition....

What is interesting is the new 35 miles per gallon requirement for 2013....and it's impact on oil prices....

The CEO of GE ....just stated that he really does not see any near term impact....

If he cannot see it....then one should really question the time frame of relevance when considering alternative energy options....

ie Solar is nothing more than a "battery charger"....and a very slow and expensive one at that....

Better solar based generator heat transfer technologies....refuse and non food biomass heat transfer technologies.....developed to charge better charging and better storage capabilities....will be/is the name of the game....

Not only for cars....but for homes as well....and maybe even more so for homes....

Needless to say....this will be the biggest game changer of the future....

Specifically this is why this is very disheartening to hear such poor comments from the CEO of GE....

Maybe some else will pull the weight....ie BYD....China....

The way it's calculated, it's "all sizzle and no steak"... might as well not have even bothered with the legislation.

Oil has to go up (in the sense that market influences are mitigated). Regardless of what the overall economy does. The gov't needs high oil price as an incentive. The last run up in oil was a test run on the impact of the economy.
 
One may consider this to be a rather odd statement....

But the key to energy alternatives to oil....

Are batteries and battery like forms of energy storage....

Solar based heat transfer (not solar panels)....refuse....biomass heat energy based transfer systems ....that will load high capacity energy storage systems whether it is for a home or car ....that can charge in very short time frames....are the sole key to energy independence from oil....and key to helping developing countries get to the developed category....

If this area is not adequately funded....then there is really no serious effort to get away from oil dependence....
 
Stop reading into it too much.

There are hefty funds allocated in the stimulus bill for batteries. Who do you think lobbied for that? The same big corporates who are now making press releases about how great they are for battling USA's dependence on oil. They just carefully omit that it will be at your expense.
