The Movie Thread

I have seen a lot films every year. Majority of film produced in each year are comedy related, and within this genre, almost all of it is romance comedy. Horror films and animation films are 2nd. Actions and drama are few per year.

Anyway, I do watch those chick flicks with friends because I have no other choice.

Must agree on D-9. Very very cool movie. Even the wifey was digging on it.

Saw D-9 today, one of the most visually impressive films I've ever seen. Very intriguing concept too, if a bit of a patchwork of previous ideas. It's like pieces of the Fly, Blackhawk Down, Alien Nation, and Independence Day.

I saw it too. I thought it was ok. I give it a rent on DVD but don't pay theatre rates to see. Many in the theatres were clapping, FWIW.
 
"Wanted", with Mrs Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and some other guy, just got it on DVD.

Interesting......some critics slagged Freeman for his characters dialogue etc, but I thought it was all pretty straight up for a ridiculous, and for a change, funny and legitimately "quirky" action movie.

Kinda like "Shooter" meets "The bourne identity" meets " The Da vinci Code " meet's "Scrubs".

I liked it, due to the fact I figured out it wasn't supposed to be in any way serious immediately-I hate it when I don't twig it's not a "serious film" until the crappy plot twists and preposterous action spoil the illusion.

Still, one critic claimed "Jolie has never been sexier", i disagree, the tomb raider stuff was sexier-I guess he has a thing for freaky esoteric tattoos on hot women , but ultimately, I guess I have imagined her bareback (umm, that isnt right-'naked rear pose' or 'nude strolling away' maybe) enough that the scene in question was a bit of a let down, figuratively.

3.5 stars from me, for its genre.

Chiming in on District 9. I thought its scope was too narrow. From the trailer and the Manhattan Island sized spacecraft hovering over I thought it would be more global; like Independence Day; not that I'm holding that up as a great film. Maybe world leaders involved, armies, not a bunch of medvac level helicopters, some personell carrying toyota pickup trucks and oversized humvees and half a swat team. That and they spent way too much time in that shanty town running around looking for Martin Short with a crab claw's black liquid that he
needed for his personal dilemna. I know, "its a movie" but theres a level of authenticity that you have to at least approach. I liked the reduced color saturation resolution it was filmed in. I agree with nitro, you should save your 6.50 and wait for it to come to your local library.
 
I though District 9 was fantastic - but I certainly appreciate that it won't suit everyone's tastes. I think there's more than plenty of action, excitement and intrigue to make up for the shortcomings in the premise.

- Problem is, if you end up watching it on DVD and really love it, you'll very much regret not seeing it at a movie theatre.
 
D9 was good compared to your typical Hollywood movie, but it didn't reach its potential. My girlfriend, who usually enjoys movies made for guys, hated it and fell asleep about half way through. This movie could have gone so many different directions but it seemed to stagnate and left me thinking it was a swing and a miss.

I hope D10 makes up for D9. I mean, it should. It's a great story in the making.
