Red River
I finally caught this classic for the first time on TCM tonight. I've never been a big John Wayne fan, but when he had the right role he could be pretty darn good. He really sinks his teeth into this one, he's not afraid to be thoroughly unlikable, and there's no denying his charisma. It's a fine performance.
The movie, kind of "Mutiny on the Bounty" set in the West during a long, brutal cattle drive, lives up to its status as a classic. It's fast-moving and exciting with beautiful cinematography and it all works until late in the movie when Joanne Dru enters the story and everything falls apart for about 20 mins. The romantic subplot between her and Clift feels tacked on and she's an absolutely terrible actress. And she puts a serious dent in this movie - in the scene at the end when she jumps into the fight between Wayne and Clift and gives her little speech the whole climax that we've been waiting for the whole movie just grinds to a dead halt. She's so bad I felt sorry for her. (What the heck, was Hawks forced to cast her?)
Even though a bit dated at times (at one point the Indian character actually says "...then you can 'getum' back in the morning.") I'd put this up there with Hawks' greatest films.
