It is rather easy to give you examples of these factors, but it includes events that can have a significant effect on supply and demand that is beyond the control of either Congress or the Fed, where all they can do is try to react after the fact to indirectly lessen the impact, if that. These events could include, but are certainly not limited to: excesses or shortages of key commodities such as energy and food; natural disasters such as pandemics; wars which disrupt supply or cause rapid changes in demand. Anyone can think of specific examples. We live in an interconnected world. Something totally out of the control of either Congress or the Fed happening on one continent can have economic consequences on another.

It has always been of interest to me to observe that the Market is usually not a very accurate reflector of the underlying economy. The market is nearly always either too high or too low to what might be expected in a perfectly rational world. We rationalize this by saying, "the Market is anticipating the future." I believe good traders and certainly good investors do buy and sell on their considered opinion of the future market prospects for what they are buying or selling, however as an observer of markets for many years I can't help but believe "human nature" is a significant factor...

The interest rate market used to do a very good job anticipating economic changes until The Fed overmanaged and mismanaged it into a secondary role.

Looks like it might be reversing which will be a good thing if it does and if it lasts.

The problem, is that phrase was stated a LONG, LONG time ago, back before the dollar was devalued to the point it is now, and there wasn't the insane unstoppable debt as now. It was from an era before every other country was trying to get rid of the US dollar, and only a few Americans even thought it conceivable that China would become dominant.
