The importance of community

Those are civilized, accomplished and educated people.

If you throw in a more diverse, or dumb, or angry and bitter and mass crowd...then things and indifferences will easily arise.

I agree that there is a correlation with education level and tolerance.

In many cases bringing together diverse individuals at a group event who are uneducated, intolerant, bitter, and/or not intelligent would be a recipe for disaster.

In our situation most of the people in our subdivision are upper middle class. The average family income is above $150K in our area. The average education level is Masters degree plus.

Yet I believe that if you make an effort to bring people together on a one-to-one level --- even when they are not from high-income or educated backgrounds can build tolerance and community with some guidance and help.

When guys like TomB and other right wingers on the board attack others, the civility police is nowhere to be found. It's always when the non-conservatives on the board who are sick and tired of all the attacks and insults fight back that cons suddenly want people to get along. Where is the call for civility when a right winger started a thread with 'libtards' in the title? Now if I start a thread with 'inbred Cons' in retaliation, that will be seen as an isolated event and totally out of the blue. Politics is mostly reactionary, the boards will reflect that.
When attacked I respond in kind. You pollute this forum with dozens of vile posts on a daily basis.

So you sat with a lesbian couple that republicans don’t believe should be able to marry, an immigrant couple republicans don’t believe should be here, a Jewish couple the Breitbart ilk hate at a “holiday party” which is an act of war on Christmas and you had a good time?

I’m sorry to tell you this but you’re a liberal commie.

It's always going to be easier getting along face to face, when people are required to remain civil in order to interact than it is when people can hide behind keyboards and say whatever they want without fear of reprisal or a real time punch in the face. Additionally, no one here is human. We're all just pseudonyms. Some of us more than one.

When a Thread Title starts with slanderous and demeaning insults it's hard to keep a civil discourse.

And I might add, I've responded to threads in a civil manner here only to be called nazi, racist, and much worse by people on this thread saying they only retaliate in kind.

I'll commit to not throwing the first punch.... But this won't last long.

I agree. I also think political conversations, as well religious, will always turn into a 'my beliefs are better than yours' situation.

If you can figure out what is wrong with this picture you will understand why civil discourse is so difficult in America.

I’ll even give you a hint, it’s one of the headlines.

I could point to several thread titles here....

You can't control other people's actions but you can try to influence them by example.

Are you willing to try?

Oh, I try all the time. But, the problem is people are easily manipulated. A headline tinkered with that misrepresents a timeline for a removal, as drudge did, changes the whole narrative of a story and distracts from a larger more important issue in front of people.

The right wing tabloid media is manipulating people. This is why a large portion of people believe in things that are absolutely not true or spun to fit a certain ideology.

And I hate being mealy mouthed and creating a false equivalency and this is not saying democrats don’t live in a bubble and are not tone deaf to working people. What I am saying is the misinformation coming from the right wing media should be criminal.
