The importance of community

This evening I attended the holiday party of our neighborhood club. I live in a community near RTP in North Carolina which includes a mix of people from all over the country and world.

At our table of ten there was a Muslim couple (he is a pharma research PhD), Jewish couple (both are accountants), a couple from India (Hindu & he works doing software development, two ladies who co-reside (you get what I mean), and my wife & myself.

I had a very excellent evening. Everyone got along. Of course I knew most of these people before this evening. We arrived first and they all decided to sit with us.

The "white elephant" gift exchange was fun and amusing -- after the dinner and desert. Wine and beer was freely flowing (for those who drink).

My point is -- if we can all get along then why can't others do the same. We all come from different backgrounds, have different political opinions, and different cultural customs... but yet we have an excellent time together for the evening.

We are a community -- despite our differences. We are open about our differences, yet still tolerant of one another -- while being civil in our discourse, even during disagreements.

Why can't people on ET do the same?

We are after all a community in the ET Politics forum -- hopefully we can make a commitment to be more civil to one another in the upcoming year - despite our differences and disagreements.

Just my two cents for the Holiday season... (after three glasses of Malbec this evening).

When guys like TomB and other right wingers on the board attack others, the civility police is nowhere to be found. It's always when the non-conservatives on the board who are sick and tired of all the attacks and insults fight back that cons suddenly want people to get along. Where is the call for civility when a right winger started a thread with 'libtards' in the title? Now if I start a thread with 'inbred Cons' in retaliation, that will be seen as an isolated event and totally out of the blue. Politics is mostly reactionary, the boards will reflect that.

I will note that I have called out people of both sides of the political spectrum in the ET forum for their civility including Tom B. I urge everyone to be civil in their discourse in this forum. My belief is that being civil builds polite discourse so it would be best if everyone made an effort to restrain themselves & be civil over the upcoming year.

jem regularly calls anyone not agreeing with his Breitbartish world view DNC trolls, other right wingers on the board always address anyone not belonging to their tribe derisively, just a few minutes ago a new guy tried to psych profile me like he was the Mentalist. Your side is simply not interested in civility or debate and I learned that a long time ago, I mean, look at the guy who is your values leader - a guy who won't even leave widows and parents of dead soldiers alone. Yes, when you guy address each other, there will be a lot of civility but I don't expect that at all when absolutely anything different to a conservative world view is presented - it will be met with hostility, snark, derision and insults.

And this is one of the main reasons most political boards are overflowing with right wingers, the non Cons simply leave as they don't want to get into the gutter with them.

If you don't stand up to bullies, they only feel more encouraged and expand their bullying to others. I remember Ricter being very civil and he was attacked all the time. Many left leaning people have left the board because of such bullying.

I have no problems strictly dealing with facts and logic but as Schopenhauer said, you can't win a debate if the other side is playing with different rules. I will never be the first person to insult or attack anyone but will be the first to respond in kind because you have to.
