No, quite early on the scientists and scholars and especially the sailors of the day knew the earth was round. It was only the ignorant masses that could not get their minds around the idea. Sort of like the way the moron denialists are today about AGW.
Doesn't mean your contrary opinion is correct.Quote from gwb-trading:
You appear to forget that Columbus' sailors nearly mutinied because they believed they were sailing off the end of the earth.
Once again, Consensus does not equal Correctness.
600 Years ago 97% of scientists thought the world was flat. Anyone who thought differently in 1413 was branded a heretic and burned at the stake. This is not very much different from today's academic world. You had to conform to the majority view not a correct interpretation based on scientific evidence.

No actually what we were taught about Columbus' sailors is incorrect. There was not widespread fear about a flat earth. Sailors were the first to directly observe the curvature of the earth when they saw masts of ships but not the hulls.
Using the argument that because scholars were wrong about things in the past so can't be trusted now is ridiculous. One could use to disparage ALL current knowledge. Comparing today's science with that of centuries ago is like comparing the judgement and knowledge of college grads with that of kindergartners.
And again, this is not rocket science. It's far easier to understand for an average person than that of the idea that people are upside down on the other side of the world. It is a fact that CO2 has gone up 35%. It is a fact it's mostly from man. It's a fact that it is a greenhouse gas. So I ask again. Can you put two and two together?
