Was the war about slavery or not? You said yourself it wasn't about slavery. I agree, slavery in and of itself was not the primary driver. Lincoln himself said he would fight the war regardless of whether or not a single slave was made free. His primary reason for fighting the war was to prevent the Union from dividing. That can be argued as a good or bad decision, but the issue of slavery was used by both sides to justify their positions.
