american cars sold then because american cars were, at that time, quality cars... now they are shit, back then american companies were the primary participants in the auto market, the vast majority of cars in the world were american in those days... now, the competition has kicked our ass, a cadi was the premiere luxury car in those days, not german cars... the luxury german cars are alot more common in europe and always have been, american cars are almost extinct there now... even when american cars should be REALLY cheap comparatively, noone wants them... usa's cars sell in asia where they are considered 'exotic' or 'cool'....
i don't know why you mention the gdp per capital figure, which is pretty incredulous anyways, because we were discussing standard of living, which is very different from gdp per capita... it's only relevant when compared to local prices.... and even by nominal gdp per capita we were number 17 in 2007 and undoubtedly lower now.... and gdp per capital if fudged almost as hard as the jobs number...
no, im sorry americans CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY so much for education, that's why they ALL TAKE OUT STUDENT LOANS which they repay for the next 1.5 DECADES. and NOW they can't even repay the loans because they can't get a fcking job!!! and now they are having a hard time even getting student loans in the first place!!! i don't know what planet you are on..... if you think the standard of living is exceptionally high in the usa it's because you haven't been to canada or europe lately. they visibly have more disposable income than americans and pay lower costs to live...
