It was known 20 years ago that the Taliban had great support in Pakistan and clearly still have as the speed of their takeover probably only happened with support from Islamabad. 20 years ago there was concern over how secure Pakistan's nuclear weapons were.
So.. The US will be back as soon as it looks like the Taliban are threatening Pakistan's nukes. This was a major justification for staying there thats slipped many minds.
