The Failure of Venezuela's Socialist Utopia.... The Maduro Diet

"... the failure of Venezuela's socialist utopia likely means that civil war is all but inevitable at some point in the future..

"An estimated 75% of Venezuelans lost at least 10 kilos last year because there is not enough food to go around... people here call it 'The Maduro Diet'...

"When we say people are eating from the garbage, we are not joking, it's our reality... people don't have enough to eat..."

Can't help but feel sorry for those people...

Also can't help but feel contempt for Lefty sheeple in our own country who still believe socialism is a good thing. Don't they pay attention?

As someone who knows a bit about Venezuela's wealth gap, let me give you a viewpoint for consideration.

When a country is on "easy-street", like Venezuela was on it's oil wealth, or the US was as European empire coffers flowed to it due to the World Wars and it's own natural resources of course, first you get an over-supply of elites and a massive rich/poor gap. Then a populist reaction to this which corrupts everything regardless of whether your system was quite capitalist or socialist balanced.

As Peter Turchin of the University of Connecticut points out:

‘Elite overproduction generally leads to more intra-elite competition that gradually undermines the spirit of cooperation, which is followed by ideological polarization and fragmentation of the political class. This happens because the more contenders there are, the more of them end up on the losing side. A large class of disgruntled elite-wannabes, often well-educated and highly capable, has been denied access to elite positions.’

As they say, the "Elites" are not that Elite of course, US colleges are like diploma factories causing Elite inflation..
