Mild virus? This thing is 200% more infectious than flu virus. Even though the lethal payload might be low at the moment, that can also change over time. If you've read anything about the Spanish Flu, you would know that there were 3 waves of onslaught. It got more lethal over time with successive waves and the third wave claimed the most lives. With the corona, we're only at the beginning stage. We don't know how far this will go, nor do we know what it can morph into.

Payload is unlikely to change, if it does we'll deal with that, stop worrying about, what might happen, 0.35% is the population estimated death rate, tested 3.8%, most people get it and don't realise they've had it and your still paranoid about it.

You don't know the severity of this virus. Nor do you know what the outcome is in, say, 6 months or 1 year from now. Even if we ultimately allow the old to expire, that alone does not guarantee the virus would stop spreading. It's only natural for the government to do everything in their power, no matter how inconvenient, to stamp out the virus and I believe they are on the right course.

Dunno either how it will turn out, but government actions seem to be dictated in large parts by public opinion, itself dependant on media coverage, plus the fact China seems to have dealt succesfully with the virus placing tough restrictions ( i ve lived in China and found it an horrible place, so I m sceptic of chinese style solutions )

Spanish Flu was 1918 we hadn't even discovered antibiotics back then and our treatment was poor and right after WW1, this is a totally different beast.

C19 is NOT THE PLAGUE, it's NOT BLACK DEATH, it's really not scarey, once you understand it, but you believe the media and not logic.

Hard to say who's right, but we are indeed fucked for the near future at least,

Near Future, these lock downs will go on for 18months, release, it's back really you don't say, repeat.

Looking at the data I'd say 50% give or take have the virus and never realise it, then more have mild symptoms and don't care, kinda hoping in the UK within a few weeks we've all had it and it drops off, if China doesn't spike back up, then odds are they've all had it.

Also, if the virus does mutate, that'll be 1 virus that mutates, all of the trillions+++ of virus's won't change into killers, then that 1 virus would have to multiply then spread to other people so on and so forth, then we'd have to aggressively try to lock that down before it got wild.

What do they teach people these days, ohhh FEAR!!! I remember.

Trivial, where do you keep coming up with this made up crap ??

I think the damage to the entire world with the shut downs well out does the damage the virus is doing and way more people are going to suffer / die from the actions that are being taken.

But I have a detailed understanding of the virus, your just scared because you don't understand virus's and the media is making it out to be wayyyy worse than it is.

p.s. literally HAD IT and so have others I know, and I'm still ALIVE and so are they!! it's wasn't a big deal, Flu I had in December was 4days of hell and soaked sheets, this errrr no biggy.

Anyway, WHO has issued a press release yesterday saying that even the healthy young people are very susceptible to catching the virus. This virus has been known to mutate over time. That means it has the ability to become more lethal in order to adjust to the healthy population. I think it's foolish to let your guard down and think you'll be okay because your relatively healthy.

Nobody is saying that younger people are invincible, but they hospitalized, require intensive care or die at much lower rates (and it's well known, too). That feeds the perception among the younger crowd that this is an old peoples illness but younger people are paying for it.

No infectious disease with 2% CFR should be considered trivial. I am merely pointing out that the policy response will likely cause a lot of tensions down the road. There were other public health options that had a much lower economic cost, but would leave more vulnerable people exposed.

Governments consider monetary costs of human lives all the time. In this case, the cost of the additional lives saved seems to be pretty high (e.g. a total shutdown vs isolating vulnerable population). So it is totally possible that the policy choices were made with the political aims in mind.
