I think its a good idea to get both perspectives, especially if you are trying to learn about the Fed.
I also think you should check out the "Free Banking Era" and buzzy suggested. Basically an unmidigated disaster in terms of free movement of goods and labor. Can you imagine each state having its own currency (or more than one), banks are constantly going under and all depositors losing everything (safest place for money is under the mattress) and all those currencies constantly moving in relation to one another.

I had posted a similar question about central banks before, and there was no such person called Edward Flaherty, Ph.D. in the Department of Economics College of Charleston, S.C when I searched the website of this college. Thus, I question the validity of this linked article.
