As its usage changed through the years, its users kept changing what is its purpose:
1. A geek experiment, a proof of concept.
(the early years, only geeks knew about it)
2. The currency of the internet
(major adoption, worldwide usage and media coverage spreading)
3. A store of value
(huge price appreciation followed by shrinking adoption due to technical difficulties, this is now)
4. A collector's item
(when price eventually falls back to 3 digits, this is in the future)
