After the dramatic shoot down of a Chinese airship off the South Carolina coast, the Defense Department notified Congress of previous incursions of U.S. airspace by Beijing during Donald's Trump presidency and earlier in the Biden administration, with sightings in Texas, Florida, Hawaii and Guam, Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) told The Washington Post on Sunday. At least two such incidents were reported near or over Florida, and there was at least one each in the other three locations, Waltz said.

Why did the US declare it was a Chinese balloon so soon?
The US could have kept quiet.
Then destroy the unknown origin balloon with some not-so-destructive, low-tech weapon
rather than a missile.
A missile could have destroyed all the balloon sensitive parts.
Then retrieve the unknown origin balloon.
Then announce it to the whole world.
It is perfectly safe to shoot down an unknown-origin balloon.
There wouldn't be any political repercussions.
Do note that China did not notify the US that China balloon
strayed into the US airspace.
And there was no 'Made-in-China' sign on the balloon.
And it did not radiate 'Made-in-China' signal.
