The case against college.

I think college is a great value if you are entering a technical field (computer science, engineering, medical). If you are going because "Mommy and Daddy" want me to or seeking some worthless degree at a school that cost more than a Humvee every semester, you're wasting your time.

The college system could certainly be more efficient, though. Most schools require you to piss away a good 30-40% of your time on worthless classes that just get in the way of your intended major.
I went to school to get my engineering degree, which means I want to learn math/science/technical class, not fucking women's studies, physical education, or something about religion.
It's too bad there isn't the college equivalent of vo-tech for tech fields.
Of course, schools will not change because they do this to pad your degree costs, but the fact you have to waste your time on them still chaps my hide.

Yep, exactly...I also knew an Australian chap who double majored in mechanical and electrical engineering and he did it in about the same time I did my EE. Bet you guess which courses he didn't have to take. :)

Fucks sake, I am sick to death of seeing the arguments on this forum about education >_> and hell I agree with the people who say it's a scam and you get nothing out of it. For the record I took a community college Diploma in Games Design.

There is huge confusion here between job training and education. There can be considerable overlap, of course, but they are not the same thing at all. It is possible to get job training without becoming educated. In fact that is common. You likely will not be able to get much of an education from any of the commercial degree mills. Their main objective is to make money by tapping into government programs.

Professional jobs are usually available to those with college degrees, not HS diplomas plus training.

engineering, teaching, medical, computer and most others require BS minimum.

You know what pisses me off though? The retards who must constantly and rabidly defend such a flawed and outright crappy system! You get what you put into it? What a shitty excuse!

The only reason I know ANYTHING about games design or how games are made is because I went and researched it MYSELF not because I took some shitty course that was based on the 'theory' of games design which taught NOTHING because it looked like something a high school teacher hurriedly put together before a meeting in order to make it look like they knew what they were talking about. In fact the only reason I can do any bloody art at all is because I was doing 3D work in class when I should have been doing the crappy written work that taught bugger all. I also got into regular arguments with teachers over why the fuck they were hardly teaching anything and the best excuse they gave was "Independent Learning" any time the poor sods who were actually interested in teaching what they knew they were instantly stepped on by management who were insistant on enforcing stupid rules that restricted the use of our computers as much as possible.

I am sick to fucking death of hearing arrogant education system obsessed twats taking credit for the work the students did by THEMSELVES with barely any fucking help from the teachers or colleges whatsoever.

Sorry for the rant, but it's really been getting to me this kind of bs lately.

you took a beating a few weeks ago from some trying the "I am a game design, the heck with college path..."

So you went silent, waited a few weeks to try and come back and hope they just went away?

The message is familiar. Colleges are youth ghettos. They promise more than they deliver. They serve as great social sorting machines and not as institutions of higher learning. Their students are pressured to attend by parents or peers and do not know what else to do. Their diplomas cost more—and are worth less—than ever before.

TOTALLY, TOTALLY AGREE.
Especially with all of the OUTSOURCING going on today.
Pick the wrong field...and you've got a ....
LOSER.
Huge tuition bills, and low pay.
That's America today.

this site is full of losers. I'm not saying I'm some super winner, either.

But come on. My friends with Ivy league degrees work for top tier investment banks and consulting firms. Others are in medical school. Even those with just below Ivy degrees have solid career paths.

4th tier state school grads aren't doin great. It's all about the name on your resume. Yes, there are some who manage to do well despite going to a shit school but it's rare...

That says it all. Are you a foreign national or something ?
Taking advantage of the USA are you ?
You are judging our educational system ?
Wow, you must feel ..... what's the word ?..... ENTITLED ?

ya guys, an eduction is worthless....

Male, age 25+ (US census data)

Less than 9th grade $15,461
High school drop-out $18,990
High school graduate $28,763
Some college $35,073
Associates degree $39,015
Bachelor's degree $50,916
Bachelor's degree or more $55,751
Master's degree $61,698
Professional degree $88,530
Doctorate degree $73,853

It's great that some of you non-grads are traders and make lots of money, but it's not so good for the rest of the average folks out there who have to work a 9-5. You are the exception, not the rule.

I can't think of one friend from university who doesn't have a good job right now. But I don't have enough fingers to count the number of non-college people I know without jobs or seeking something more than minimum wage.

But whatever. Be angry all you want. Don't save up for your kids college funds. It's not worth it apparently. Fuck the system....

You went to a diploma mill to get a degree in something absolutely useless. I cannot help you.
