The bitter truth about Patak Trading

You can't just make a blanket statement that CL is a superior trading vehicle to the indices or any other market. Different markets move at different times. Volatility is cyclical and usually when you have good trading in one market for an extended period of time it is usually due for a rest and vice versa. There are times when crude is dead and its prob not a very good trading vehicle. There are times when the indices are dead and they are not a great trading vehicle.

Now to me this is some good ol' trading 101, Markets are always changing!

Just stop the conversation about ES CL etc. This thread is about the Bitter Truth of Patak Trading.

I am going to drop an atom bomb! Watch out. Give me 10-30 minutes.

The bitter truth .. it's a waste of time .. multiple threads on this bs

someone can trade on a sim account to get the basics down
then open a retail account & trade a small live account

there is no free lunch , hopefully most people realize that

good post. Unfortunately, many people still don't realize that this firm is BS. Look at the poll that colonial dr has started. Almost 50% still have a positive feel for it. As I said in one of my earlier posts in this thread, when you have 1-3 million on line, touts and pimps abound.

I am about to finish the thing that I am going to post.

First of all, fixed income is way more diverse then just the "massive bond market". Second of all, most fixed income transactions are OTC and done over the phone or Blomberg chat. Can't tell you about pencils and cigars, but the phones are still black. Yes, you can trade government futures electronically for some countries (that is, the liquid world is still only UST+Germany+JGBs), but the bulk of money still changes hands manually. If you can capture CDS or corporate spreads "in size", I tip my hat to you, so far dealer banks are not able to do it well.

Even in the "massive bond market" the vast majority of guys who trade rates or cash govies still execute over the chat or the phone. Electronic execution is just getting there in the government bond space and even there, spreads are ridiculous and liquidity is sparse. I can't even predict when corporates will go electronic and not even going to venture a guess when credit derivatives will go this way.

In the equity space, most people who trade long/short execute by hand (and thats bigger chunk of money in the hedge fund space these days). Most people who trade options do not have automated execution, simply because liquidity in the options market is still mainly bespoke. There is also a whole market for OTC derivatives that only works by appointment across all products.

All I was trying to say that automation (which you are, apparently, in love with) is not as necessary as you claim it should be. There is more to trading then scalping equities on major exchanges. I was just modifying your statement that while automation might be necessary, there is no denying that computerized R&D is unavoidable.

Look, from the previous posts, you appear to be fairly experienced and exposed to the industry. In this case you already aware of the facts on your own. If you have been deceiving me et al. and are more junior, then you should go and research OTC products, if at least to understand a bunch of drivers for the listed equity and fixed income markets.

From the poll, its clear that still almost 50% of newbies think Patak is a good opportunity. A big reason for their thinking is because a very respected ET member who is amazing at creating illusions of reality using words, is defending Patak like a Shield.

So, this is the Bitter Truth about Maverick who is trying very very hard to convince everyone how wonderful this Patak operation is. Please read multiple Maverick's post on this linked thread from 2010 and you will know what were his real views when he was still a good guy.

A seasoned professional like Mav (Mav claims to have 15 yrs experience) does not change his views on an industry or the place where a firm belongs in the industry suddenly. The only thing that can cause such a polar change in the views of a seasoned professional like Maverick is MONEY. Money is such a bitch! It forces smart guys to get to the dark side. Now that we have proved that king has no clothes, all his blind followers - I hope you will read his posts with a more critical eye.

Maverick - Come back to the bright side!
