Holding people responsible criminally might be to far but if we are going to allow people to have guns they need to be responsible for them.Letting anybody buy a gun legally and not be responsible for them is why so many criminals get them. When I was around 7 someone broke in our house and stole 7 of my dads guns.He didn't have a safe just kept them in their boxes on a shelf in the closet. They were insured so no big deal to him.If he knew he would have faced tougher consequences by being being liable for any crimes those guns were involved he wouldn't have been so careless. He did get a gun safe after though.I think its more than likely some of his guns were used in future crimes.
This doesn't address how many crimes have been thwarted by legal gun usage.
Some sort of liability would be OK as long as it weren't criminal. If your gun is stolen and someone uses it to kill someone else, you shouldn't be held accountable for the murder. A slippery slope like that is what I'd be concerned about.

To add to this, in the US, if lethal force is used in a self-defense situation, it's gonna be ~$200k in legal fees to defend in court if charged.

Best I could find from The FBI.
We do know from The FBI that there are only around 400 justifiable homicides out of 40,000 gun deaths per year.
That's is why I suggest an alternative. If you choose to own a gun you take some responsibility for whatever damage that gun does, both civilly and criminally.Don't want that responsibility, don't own a gun.How about the peace of mind being armed can provide? Especially after a violent attack, such as rape or mugging? As crime gets worse, does it not also follow the perceived need of self-protection increases? Are you really ok with infringing someone’s right to defend themselves? Do you really need to become a victim of a serious crime before you can understand “What all the fuss is about”? Many women are helpless in a crime. Women who are mothers, daughters, and wives. Are not minorities disproportionately affected by crime? Based on your posts, my impression is you cared about their rights. But not the rights of minorities when it comes to their self-protection? For all the debate on gun control is the real purpose to try to get guns out of hands of minorities because they are more likely to use a gun in a crime than Whites? How racist. Which race would you expect to see a disproportionate impact of illegal gun ownership?
Republicans are paying a political price for infringing upon reproductive rights. Democrats risk paying a political price if they go stupid on gun control.
