It's not new, it just didn't have the focus when land temps were increasing so rapidly. But since CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and its level is increasing, scientists had to figure out where the heat was going, if not on land. Fortunately, some measurement of ocean temps has been going on for decades, so they didn't have to start from scratch.

Earth is very self-regulating. Do some computations on the volume of air that has gone through automobile engines sometime, you will be aghast. The earth has adjusted for that and keeps us with enough oxygen to continue on. I'm not advocating low-efficiency gas-producing energy sources but I'm saying that earth is a self-regulating thingy.

As the temps warm the oceans release co2.

you have no science showing co2 causes the oceans to warm.
before you at least had crazy models to show co2 causes land temps to warm. You have nothing now to explain that ocean warming is not part of natural variability.
