Maybe not... can't remember the tax laws back then, but I recall the earnings were still taxed to the parent in such a gift up to an age of _____? (Then again perhaps there were no children... perhaps no minor children...)

And as I've thought about it more... UGMA accounts are probably still "beneficial ownership" to the subject person in SEC regulation considerations.
