New antibody-resistant COVID mutation shows up in Texas. Of course it started in some rural GOP area, Brazos Valley, consisting of seven counties where nearly nobody follows proper public health mandates such as masks or social distancing.

Texas A&M University researchers have identified a new COVID-19 variant called BV-1, after Brazos Valley, where it originated.
Scientists at the Texas A&M Global Health Research Complex (GHRC) identified the variant from a saliva sample taken from a student as a part of an ongoing testing program. Researchers believe it’s related to the United Kingdom variant.
The student with the confirmed case showed mild flu-like symptoms for nearly a month, suggesting this new variant may cause a longer than normal infection in young adults. Although only one mild case has been confirmed, researchers are worried that the variant shows resistance to antibodies.
“We do not at present know the full significance of this variant, but it has a combination of mutations similar to other internationally notifiable variants of concern,” GHRC Chief Virologist Ben Neuman said in a press release. “This variant combines genetic markers separately associated with rapid spread, severe disease and high resistance to neutralizing antibodies.”
There have been five COVID-19 variants confirmed by the Center for Disease Control, but researchers across the world have identified thousands.

A mix infections and vaccinations has North Texas at about 60% immunity, close to the minimum 80% that would make it safe to roll back mitigation strategies, said Dr. Rajesh Nandy, an associate professor of biostatistics and epidemiology in the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s School of Public Health. That should happen around mid-June.
“When we reach that, we can say ‘OK, we have some semblance of normalcy and it’s kind of under control,” Nandy said.

jemmie, texas can't help failing. Look at the map! Texas is almost all red. Of course it will fail, over and over again. The rest of us will have to bail Texas out over and over, as we had to with the power crisis. Maybe we should just cut them loose and let them twist slowly in the wind. But I think we must keep helping them for the sake of our many Latino and Latina brothers and sisters that are sadly stuck there in the Republican Hell of Texas.
