Half of EV owners will go back to an ICE vehicle (not counting you, Tesla drivers)

In a seemingly bizarre yet tragic twist, a new study says that EV owners are a fickle bunch. After purchasing an electric vehicle, half of EV owners go back to ICE vehicles as either a replacement car or a second vehicle – all with the exception of Tesla owners, who are (no surprise) notorious for their fierce brand loyalty.

A new study from S&P Global Mobility revealed that EV owners switching back to ICE vehicles had three classic arguments: pricing, infrastructure, and range anxiety, and other consumers just felt better having an ICE or hybrid vehicle in the garage as a backup plan.

The study looked at data from this year through July on a slew of major brands, with Nissan coming in strong in loyalty to EVs at 63.2%, followed by Chevrolet at 60.6%.
Looking at the data on individual models, 37.3% of Ford Mustang Mach-E owners bought another EV, versus 45.8% opting for an ICE vehicle, with a large number of buyers transitioning from a Ford truck or SUV in both ICE and hybrid powertrains.

By contrast, of the Nissan Leaf owners who bought another EV, the most popular next purchase was a Tesla Model Y at 14.3%, followed by another Leaf at 12.4%. The Chevrolet Bolt also kept a majority of owners – 60.7% – in EVs, with 28.8% getting another Bolt. Like the Mach-E with Ford, the Bolt saw ICE households switch to Chevrolet SUVs and trucks.

What about luxury brands? Data showed that 56.6% of Mercedes-Benz EV buyers stick with the EV lifestyle, a huge jump from 24.3% in Q2 2020. Jaguar EV loyalty also increased from 25% to 56.5%, Audi was up from 25.5% to 50.1%, and Porsche saw a bump from 23.3% to 36.8%.
Tesla, the market leader, saw an increase in EV loyalty from 51.8% to 76.7%.

Electrek’s Take
What this basically boils down to is that legacy ICE automakers are feeling the heat – Tesla is picking off the competition with its high volumes of quality EVs, keeping consumers loyal to their brand and to the electrified future. Meanwhile, legacy brands are busy playing catch up, struggling to keep consumers interested. The data, however, does shed some light on work that still needs to be done in keeping consumers on the grid and not reverting back to fossil fuels.

“The OEMs are spending huge amounts of money to develop EVs,” associate director for loyalty solutions and industry analysis at S&P Global Mobility, Tom Libby said. “So the last thing they want is for an EV owner to go back to ICE.”

Assault with battery? I'd guess the battery compartment had a leak when they drove through some standing water.

Edinburgh couple fume as they are handed £17K bill by Tesla as they 'drove in rain'
The pair have told of the "excruciating stress" that has been caused by the ordeal, with Tesla allegedly demanding they pay for the battery that stopped working after a drive in the rain.

    Rob in the Tesla.

An Edinburgh couple say they are “in shock” after claiming Tesla gave them a £17,000 bill to fix their battery that was ‘damaged by the rain’.

Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey told how they have been faced with the massive bill when their £60,000 electric car stopped working when the capital was faced with extreme weather last week.

Following “frustrating” correspondence with the company, which boasts Elon Musk as its largest shareholder, the pair say they are still being asked to fork out £17,374 despite claiming no fault on their part.

Johnny and Rob left their home near Baberton to head to a popular city centre restaurant last Saturday. Although they arrived with no issues, they say their car wouldn’t start as they attempted to leave after enjoying their meal

Johnny said: “I honestly can’t believe that this has happened. When I first got the call I thought we would get bill for £500 or £1000. When they said over 17 grand – it’s absolutely obscene. My heart missed a beat, honestly.

“We went out for dinner and drove our car to Frederick Street. Obviously, it was wet with the weather last week, but I honestly can’t remember any huge puddles or anything like that. It’s not like I was driving my car through the Cairngorms.

“After dinner the car just wouldn’t move. Eventually we had to contact the Tesla Roadside Assistance - around 10pm.

“After a few annoyingly difficult further calls, and one failed collection attempt, our car was collected by a firm suitable for Tesla collection and delivered to Tesla Edinburgh about 1am.

After complaints from me, we received a call at 5.30pm on the Wednesday saying the battery was damaged due to water ingress and it was unfortunately not covered by the battery’s 8-year warranty and so the repair would be around £17,500

“Did I wish to proceed?? I was flabbergasted and couldn’t really find my words”

John and Rob are still reeling from the huge bill.
John says he pressed representatives of Tesla on whether he or Rob were at fault for the damage, to which he claims he was told that it was a weather issue.

He continued: “They said that the battery is effectively submerged in water. How can that be our fault?

“After finally getting to speak to a manager, he told me it had water in it due to the fact the weather in Scotland has been so bad. That was the issue. They said it’s not necessarily my fault but it’s not Tesla’s to pay under warranty. He reminded me there was a yellow weather warning in some parts of Scotland.

“I pushed him on this and said I’ve never heard or something like this happening. He said it can happen with Range Rovers and Mercs but I’m just not buying it.

“To date, it’s been a disaster of a service and the stress and worry of this is excruciating. I said to the manager, ‘so, my understanding is, Teslas are unfit for purpose in Scotland?.”

I’ve been driving for 30 years and this is my most premium car to date and this is what it does when Edinburgh’s roads get puddles or a little wet!”

Edinburgh Live has seen correspondence between the couple and Tesla which confirms the £17,374 bill.

Furthermore, an email from Tesla customer relations also commits to an investigation into the complaint and a response on behalf of the business.

John added: “If I had known the customer service would be so bad I’m not sure I would have bothered buying the car. Do they know that we’re in Scotland? That weather was not abnormal for living here.

"I can only see the number of claims on problems like this going up. The thing is, Elon Musk could buy everyone in the world a Tesla if he wanted to.”

Tesla UK & Europe have been approached for comment.

Sell Tesla, buy Porsche!

The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé draw their system output of 500 kW (680 PS; Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid: Fuel consumption combined 3.9–3.7 l/100 km, electricity consumption 19.6–18.7 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 90–85 g/km; Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé: Fuel consumption combined 3.9–3.7 l/100 km, electricity consumption 19.6–18.7 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 90–85 g/km) from the intelligent interaction of a four-litre V8 engine (404 kW/550 PS) and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission (100 kW/136 PS). The maximum system torque of 900 Nm is available from just above idle. Both models accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 295 km/h. This exceptional performance is matched by a high level of efficiency: the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé can drive for up to 40 kilometres with zero local emissions. The average NEDC consumption is 3.9–3.7 l/100 km (fuel) and 19.6–18.7 kWh/100 km (electric).

In addition to the two top models, the hybrid range from Porsche now includes the new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé with system power of 340 kW (462 PS; Fuel consumption combined 3.2–3.1 l/100 km, electricity consumption 18.7–17.7 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 75–72 g/km), torque of 700 Nm, and electric range of up to 43 kilometres. The Cayenne E-Hybrid, which now features a gasoline particulate filter, is available to order again.

It would have been piling on if I had posted earlier a Yahoo story from this morning about investors expectations for this after market close release - which was kinda accurate if I do say so myself.

But ..... everyone "knows" Yahoo/CNBC/Bloomberg/AP/Aunt Mabel all have an TSLA axe to grind. Can't be trusted. Harump, harump.

What'd ya mean earnings are down, but they're still green. What'd ya mean margins are down, they're still on the plus side. What sales are down, still sold more than blah, blah, blah.

Sub $250, appears to be heading back to $220-200 support zone.

Yes, as union shops they do have an axe to grind. I wish they'd just report instead of spin, but it is what it is.

Can't wait for TSLA to drop to sub 230, it's an opportunity.

Can't wait to hear GM Q3 report.. oh , wait that's right...
