We agree that nothing worthwhile in the form of economic or financial innovation comes out of think tanks, universities or research firms, at least not recently. On the other hand it isn't being discovered by the top tier quants either, especially in Asia.
Those individuals I named are the CEO of HSBC India and the Chairman of China & Asian Operations. I actually communicate with these type of organizations at the level of your boss's boss. I'm not puffing my chest out just stating fact.
