Teachers' Unions Profit at Students' Expense

How does the child's education get paid for?

Public schools are funded by sales tax & income tax. But at the local level a vast majority of the funds come from property taxes & a vast majority of property tax goes to school funding. This may vary by State & local governments. Where the funds comes from is not the issue. I have no children, yet I must pay the same tax as those that do. So I'm forced to pay for the school system I do not use. Now some may make the argument that I benefit from a educated society, so I should contribute. This I agree with. We all benefit by funding the public school system. The issue is a voucher system takes funds OUT of the public school system regardless of where or what tax it came from. Parents should have a choice, and if they can afford it, to send their children to the best school available. I believe this also creates competition that improves the service. So, how is it fair that parents who chose to send their children to private schools receive a voucher, or essentially a rebate on taxes paid to supplement the cost of that preference. They make the argument that since they aren't using the public schools they should get some of their taxes back to support their child's education. I do not directly use the public school system, yet I pay the same tax. So do they benefit less from an educated society. Should they pay less because they don't directly use the public school system simply because they have the means to send their child to an alternative. The voucher system continues to reduce funding to the public school system and will continue to reduce the quality of the public schools. As public schools get poorer, only the poor go there. As public schools become dilapidated, ineffective & underfunded failures, more and more of the public feel they must find something better for the sake of their children's future. We see this now in many inner cities where it's common to here the phrase "I would never send my kid to public school" And the division of the Rich & Poor becomes ever greater.

People using vouchers aren't getting their money back or a free ride. They're paying the same as everyone else and their money is going to a different school. A school that they think might actually teach their kid something. To make a better educated society.

Most vouchers are currently used to send children to private religious schools. Do you find it acceptable for your tax dollars to be used to send children to a fundamentalist Islamic school whose curriculum comes from Saudi Arabia?

Not any more than I find it acceptable for the money to be sent to a public school where they're inculcated with atheism and absolutely deluged with HOMO shit. So what's the difference?

Separation of church and state, eh? Public schools are required by law to teach only the subjects and not indoctrinate students in any religion.

I guess you are Ok with your tax dollars going to the equivalent of madrasas.

I guess you can't read. I said I'm not ok either with that or what the public schools are doing.

So you want nobody to be educated because you don't want to pay for it. I guess a better use for your money will be locking up the uneducated youth in prison when they come rob houses in your neighborhood.

My position is with the exception of a few schools for troubled/special kids end the public school system and go all voucher and private sector schools.Let the public sector buy and renovate current schools or build new schools and compete for voucher money.I read that the cost for every child in the public school system averages out around 11,000- 12,000 a year for each student.Thats around the same average price of private schools in The US and they do a much better job than public schools. These lazy ass public school union teachers who get paid whether kids are educated or not would have to do their jobs or be out of a job.

Exactly. Close thread. Either let the free market give us educational choices. Or stick with the beaurucratic monopoly that has driven costs through the roof with poor results.
