Teacher resigns after reading students book about gay couple

Note the school board is still debating if the book is an appropriate book for elementary school students.

The teacher and principal were forced to resign for fabricating a story about a bullying situation which they failed to document in accordance with state law.

There are proper guidelines in the state for handling bullying situations which include informing administrators, documenting the situation, involving guidance personnel, addressing the children, counselling the bully & victim(s) and informing the parents. Reading a book to the class as a remedy is not on the list of appropriate actions. None of the actions were followed in this "bullying situation" because it was a complete fabrication.

Nuclear Armageddon vs. acknowledging and accepting differences in people: six of one, half dozen of the other...

There's that asshole snark again. Ok, let's take it up a notch.

You folks on the left think you can dictate to the rest of us what should be acceptable for kids and what should not be. In your mind, a video that might give children nightmares (the Day After) should require parents to consent, but a book about two gay princes marrying each other is just fine and dandy. I'm sorry to tell you that there's no difference. You might look at it in your fucked up world as promoting tolerance, but it's our children - we'll decide on what they should see and at what age. You can take your input to my kid and piss off.

Thankfully, the school chose correctly.

Yeah, I made the comparison because both cases should have been approved by parents! One was, the other wasn't. That's not snark. Then your usual dickhead self came in and tried to make the point that they weren't even closely related. But instead of just civilly disagreeing and telling us why they should be different, you had to use your usual charming wit that's been a trademark of Brass, Thunderdog, Gabfly, etc.to make a smarmy comment. And you wonder why people don't have civil conversations with you - why folks loathe engaging you on any topic.

Talk about being full of shit. But then that's always been your problem: All hat, no cattle.

Maybe it's time for a new username now that you've soiled this one in under a few weeks. Or better yet, find some Canadian board to talk politics on.

how about we just leave 3rd graders to be fricken 3rd graders and just tell them bullying is wrong and they will go to the principal.

I have a 3rd grader (soon to be forth) and there is no reason to read that book to them. live and let live... lets not go indoctrinating.

Orange Schools closes book on gay fairy tale controversy
http://www.wral.com/orange-schools-closes-book-on-gay-fairy-tale-controversy/14724021/

Parents dropped their complaints over a gay fairy tale read to an Efland elementary school class, and Orange County Schools officials have canceled a public meeting on the complaints that was scheduled for Thursday night.

The two complaints were withdrawn after teacher Omar Currie and Vice Principal Meg Goodhand resigned from Efland-Cheeks Elementary School this week.

The parents complained after Currie read "King & King" to his third-graders in April to deal with a case of bullying. The parents said the book was inappropriate for children that age, and at least one said parents should have been notified in advance.

The children's book is about two princes falling in love and living happily ever after.

Orange County Schools officials say they had no reports of bullying in Currie’s class.

Efland-Cheeks Elementary officials upheld the book in April after an initial complaint and ruled again last month that the book was appropriate after fielding questions from angry parents during a community meeting.

The parents recently appealed the matter to Orange County Schools officials, where a district committee has been evaluating the book in light of curriculum goals.

Because the complaints have been withdrawn, that process has ended, and the school's decision on the book stands, officials said.
