Billy Joel never was a classical pianist and it's not a fair comparison. In fact, the technical proficiency has been steadily increasing among classical musicians. Just compare the the way Liszt was played be the older generation like Horowitz to a more "modern" classical musician like Kissin. Then compare it to someone really recent like Valentina Lisitsa. Each generation added a whole new level of technical sophistication and level of detail, partly because the approaches to teaching/practice have been refined and partly because we have all sorts of nifty technology that helps with minor corrections/changes.

artists are driven by originality, plenty of skillful classical pianists today that will never make it big because well, shit was done 300 yrs ago.
Well, technical proficiency is necessary but not sufficient. For a modern classical musician, you have to be way more proficient than a classical musician some 100 years ago. But true, simply having a perfect technical skill is not going to get you to the top.

My 23 year old daughter proclaimed her IQ is higher than mine, too which I answered you must be a genius as I'm just short, she didn't understand what a 33% reduction on £150 meant let alone was value wise, taking IQ 80s but anyone with a huge ego she sees as smart.

yeah i don't know a whole lot about that topic so defer to your better knowledge but I still maintain that the broad level of skill has deteriorated through the years. Perhaps its because society has no longer any need for these skills such as a master watchmaker, sculptor, painter etc
Also as I mentioned the advent of social media, has given people like the Kardashians are a platform to be idolized. Further people want to be entertained and low attention spans have dropped dramatically, perhaps due to the breadth of things one can try their hand at. I suspect many of these great talents do exist but just overshadowed by the YT wannabe star
I live in China and the difference in abilities of kids across all disciplines compared to their western counterparts is stark. However that comes at a grave cost of a miserable childhood. School hours for high school kids here are 7am to 10pm. Saturdays and sundays are filled with extracurricular activities. Breds generations of talent but almost inhumane treatment.
They go too far one way and we have let standards lack. 50% of all PhD students in USA are foreign born from what I read (60% in Maths and computers apparently) It could be that the education industry has just growth to accommodate foreign students demands
In the US, we prefer to teach (self) esteem instead of STEM. Therefore we are full of self esteem but no STEM.

My dad smokes way too much weed and doesn't really talk much unless its about money,so nope.
