Swine Flu...

Quote from Frostie:

Watch the ban on hog import/exports come into effect in the near future if this outbreak doesn't clear up quickly. There me be a major impact on processing plants as well.
I"m confused.(nothing new there)
This virus spreads from human to human.
The virus is a mix of swine flu, and bird flu, that incubated in humans, then made the "jump" to a communicable disease.
Why would we ban pork?

Quote from Cutten:

I thought with new strains of flu, the whole danger is that there *is no vaccine*. Vaccines require exposure first, so it would take a few months (or more) to develop one.
Yes, I disn't express that clearly. In normal years, there's a shortage of available vaccine for flu shots and most of the population doesn't bother getting it. What would happen in a pandemic outbreak? Any available vaccine would be in short supply.

Quote from Susannah:

Wonder if this flu causes a cytokine storm in your body like the Spanish flu did, that's why so many young, otherwise healthy people died from it. It caused your immune system to just go absolutely wild, the stronger your immune system, the stronger your symptoms and seemingly your chance of death from it.
The Spanish flu which killed 20 million peeps after WWI is a swine flu variation and that's why outbreaks are of concern.

Quote from CET:

A lot of the small biotechs that are working on "flu" vaccines were bid up nicely Friday, but most only have drugs in development stage.
BTW, do a web search on "Fort Dix + Swine Flu" and read about the swine flu vaccine fiasco in the mid 70's. You can also toss in "Guillain-Barré Syndrome". You might think twice about taking your chances with the flu instead of any new vaccine.

Actually, these types of flu killed 40 million one time and 20 million at another.......all BEFORE air travel!

Your correct.

But this fact didn't stop Russia from ban-ing pork and "all meat" from being imported from the hot spots.
Putin has his own agenda though.

April 26 (Bloomberg) -- Russia suspended imports of all meat from Mexico and the U.S. states of Texas, California and Kansas shipped after April 21 on concern about the spread of swine flu, the country’s veterinary watchdog said.

The suspension also affects pork from Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, Salvador, and the U.S. states of Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Florida, the watchdog added in a statement on its Web site today.

Swine flu, known as the H1N1 virus, originated in Mexico where it has been linked to as many as 81 deaths.

Travelers arriving in Russia from the above areas will have meat products confiscated, the watchdog, known as Rosselkhoznadzor in Russian, said in the statement.

Why would we ban pork?

The same reason they killed 300 million chickens when the bird flu started to spread in China. The same reason there was a ban of Canadian beef to the US/Japan and Britain when BSE was found in a Canadian cow.

Quote from shortie:

this is BAD! this flu seems deadly and contagious. previous chicken flu cases were deadly but not very contagious.

but it won't have any effect on monday trading since the news was known last week and is priced in. what happens going forward will depend on the number of casualties.

watching the flu news snowball i am changing my mind. the news is big and it is becoming the common knowledge only this weekend. some knee-jerk reaction in the general market is likely.

You should probably pursue a career as a reporter, since you like sensationalism so much. Each year there are 36K flu related deaths. Sure this could be something big, but it did not just start a few days ago. Jerry Springer probably needs a new guest too. Give it a rest.
