"36K deaths by the flu every year." Take away infants, the extremely old, the extremely weak from other illnesses, and that number is MUCH smaller. Not to mention it's 36K out of hundreds of millions exposed to the virus. Once hundreds of millions are exposed to this new swine flu we'll have a better idea what we're dealing with.

as for personal safety i'm not worried about the swine flu in the least.

Well, Mexico closed every school in the country. With these precautions and modern medicine, a repeat of the Spanish flu casualty rate is unlikely to ever happen again, that is, IF it's taken seriously.
