Sweden’s chief epidemiologist has admitted he is “not convinced” his country’s strategy of dealing with coronavirus without introducing a strict lockdown is the right decision.

The Swedish government has been an outlier in Europe by keeping most restaurants, bars and schools open during the Covid-19 pandemic, while neighbouring countries have implemented strict measures to restrict movement and social contact.

In an interview with the newspaper Aftonbladet, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said health officials were constantly reviewing evidence on the effectiveness of the strategy.

“I'm not convinced at all. We are constantly thinking about this… What can we do better and what else can we add on?” Mr Tegnell said.

“I think the most important thing all the time is to try to do it as well as you can, with the knowledge we have and the tools you have in place. And to be humble all the time because you may have to change.”

The country has primarily relied on voluntary measures to fight Covid-19, with Swedes asked to keep distance from each other, work from home where possible and avoid travel.

I don't think he is backing down now...

The stats being reported to today are incredible...
The new cases chart - Lowest since the middle of March.

And no new deaths... that I could see.

So far all Sweden has managed to do is have greater number of deaths per capita than its neighbors and sink its economy worse than its neighbors.

It's hard to make a case that Sweden's COVID-19 strategy has in any way benefited the country,

Right this is what people don’t understand. The economy was already going to tank from Covid without mitigation strategies.

3000 deaths for Sweden is the same as 100,000 deaths for the US.

Stockholm death rate is at New York City levels.

They are no where close to herd immunity yet.

Sweden population is 10 million. They need to hit 6 million infections and 40,000 deaths before they get anywhere close to herd immunity. If there is such a thing for this Virus.

They are currently at around 500,000 infected and 3000 dead.

The reality of herd immunity is that its dependent on multiple factors which we don't yet know. 60 percent is number projected from a virus with certain characteristics. If the spread rate in the low risk group is much less than 1 then herd immunity might not have to be at 60.


other questions...

1. Do we get herd immunity to Corona?
2. What is the infection spread rate of presumably low risk groups which are not on lockdown?
3.Do some people just not catch the virus?

However, any way you slice this issue... As the a FED spokesman said today we can't stay in lockdown forever.... so what is the point of locking down those in the low risk group?

Im not pro lockdown. But it is obvious to me you cant really isolate high risk groups on their own. Not unless you daily test anyone they come into contact with.
Otherwise they will just catch it from asymptomatic low risk people (where it has been allowed to run rampant) and the high risk groups will get hit badly as well.

The other way would be to have such a good handle on the disease like the South Koreans have, they are a much better model than Sweden.

High risk people can isolate themselves... It just takes more work than most are willing to do.

I have a neighbor on Chemo. She has let her kids out of the house.
If it were me... if my kids wanted out... they would have to stay with friends.
I am not blaming her. Its here health at risk her call.

But we should not be destroying the economy when high risk people could be isolating.

Sweden has demonstrated one thing very clearly. No matter what measures they took it is almost impossible to keep COVID-19 out of high-risk nursing homes -- especially if you are allowing the rest of society run-around with no lock-down.

I deleted my post because I don't really care that southall has an opinion that is different than mine. He is not shoving Covid fear and lies down our throats... So I deleted my post.

You however are nuts on this issue.
My mom is in a nursing home. No Covid.
They have seriously locked it down as they should.

Any time someone says clearly... I have learned to say prove how clear it is.

So show us stats on deaths in nursing homes that had no Covid before the lockdown.

Sweden has demonstrated one thing very clearly. No matter what measures they took it is almost impossible to keep COVID-19 out of high-risk nursing homes -- especially if you are allowing the rest of society run-around with no lock-down.
