svchost.exe by itself is normal and a part of Windows (see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056. There are, however, intances where constant high CPU usage by it can reflect the existance of a worm/virus. Google around a bit for more info.

It is harmless in most cases.
If you really want to get rid of it:
1) Go into C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications. If there are any apps in here, do _not_ disable the service below.
2) If you do not care about getting some complaints at boot time about this service running, go to Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Services. Find Com+ Event System right click on it and select properties from the pop up menu. Click on Stop. A message telling you that another service will be stopped as well. Hit OK.
At this point, there may be one or two running on your machine still...
Always write down on paper what you turned on/off, when, what effects is had, etc. This way, you can back out of it. Never turn off more than a couple at a time. This way you will not go crazy trying to figure out which of the services you turned off is the one that is causing you grief.

This was correct in my case. There were several svchost.exe files running at the same time. My cpu was constantly running and one day I get a call from my cable provider telling me that someone's been sending out mass spam from my ip address and using up my bandwidth. I tried several anti-virus programs to remedy the problem but to no avail. Finally I reformatted my hard drive and that fixed it. I have a firewall up at all times now and have had no further problems.
Good luck.
