here is the explanation. Car x which before according to gov. agency was rated at 18 MPG was after the weekend getting 19 MPG. Somehow the numbers increased ??????. One of the car affected was the toyota camry v6 model which was produced in huge numbers since the early 90's and thus eliminated many potential customers.

This is from the CARS legislation itself:

"The agency has decided to implement this process in the rule, requiring a dealer that receives an eligible trade-in vehicle under the CARS program to disable that vehicle’s engine prior to transferring the vehicle to a disposal facility, and to provide a certification to the agency that it has done so at the time the dealer submits its request for reimbursement."

To make matters worse, you can actually replace a clunker with a new car/truck that has an MPG rating that's below the clunker rating of 18mpg.

All you need is a 1mpg improvement to qualify for the $3,500 rebate.

Pathetic.
 
Let's break it down:
Government takes over auto industry with our tax dollars.
Consumers still don't buy.
Government provides incentive to sell cars with more tax dollars.
Cars sell.
Leftists celebrate in massive circle jerk as socialism works it way deeper in to the system.
Worked so well in the housing market, didn't it?

No it doesn’t make sense because it is wrong, but then again what good are facts when the Republicans have so many good theory’s. Here is how it actually works.

1) Go to cars.gov and use the very simple process to determine if you qualify. You could probably a kid to do it for you, I’m sure they’ll have no problem figuring it out.
2) Go to the dealer and ask if they are doing the program and confirm with them that you qualify.
3) Pick out a new car.
4) Take the mpg of the new car and subtract the old car’s mpg. If it is between 0-3, you get no credit, if it is between 4-9 you get $3500. If it is more than 10, you get $4500.
5) Subtract the credit from the purchase price. This is the price you will pay.
6) Pay for your car
7) Give your clunker to the dealer and drive your new car home.
8) Dealer will take your old car and destroy it.
9) Dealer will then apply for the credit reimbursement
10) Everybody except Republicans are happy. Actually they will eventually be when the decreased use of fuel lowers gas prices

I know this is very complicated for a Republican trying to paly dumb, but it’s really not that hard. Sorry to dissapoint you.

Thanks for that. Wow I wish everybody on ET could be so simple as to actually back up what they’re saying with some sort of evidence. Silly me.

I guess it looks like the rules weren’t finalized yet and some people made deals before they were.

"Fortunately, most of our customers weren't on the edge," he said. The average fuel economy of his Clunker trade-ins has been about 16 mpg, he said.
Dealers who entered into agreements with customers before last Friday, based on a fuel economy figure listed at fueleconomy.gov, have only themselves to blame, said Tyson.
"We made it very clear that they would be holding themselves out to some risk if they consummate a deal before the program officially begins," Tyson said

That is dead wrong. More nay sayer lies. If the difference is between 0-3, you get no credit, if it is between 4-9 you get $3500. If it is more than 10, you get $4500. You would have know this if you had simply gone to the official website. Looks like you’re the pathetic one.

For the record, I tried to logon to the cars.gov a few days ago to get more information. I got timed out. I tried several times. Continuing time outs.

OK, if it will make you feel better. I will try again later tonight.
