Suspend "Cash for Clunkers"?

It appears from the stories I've read that the dealers have yet to be reimbursed.

Would not be shocked if it stays that way.
 
Not only that, it was a complete clusterfuck when they officially opened it.

Lots of people getting in, dealers not getting reimbursed OK, website continually crashing from overloads, call enter lines jammed to the hilt...

When you offer something that feasibly millions of people are eligible for...
 
1 billion divided by $4500 is 222,222 fuel efficient cars. That works out to about one new car per every 1000 licensed drivers in the U.S. Looks like we're going to need some more stimulus money.

The cash for clunkers pgrm was based on EPA gas mileage figures for the car being "traded in".
Last week, the EPA revised those figures UPWARDS, dissapointing many people who were about to trade their clunker in for a new car, and even locking out customers who'd already taken delivery of a new car!
Dealers had to take back "slightly used" new cars, do refunds, and give customers their old cars back when the Government Pgrm refused to hand over the money to the Dealers.
Amazing.
Yea, lets see how our Government does "Health Care".
 
It's "suspended" as of midnight tonight. The same organization that brings us public restrooms, public education and this screwup - and some dolts literally want their lives to depend on them for healthcare. :P

WASHINGTON -- The government plans to suspend its popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases, congressional officials said Thursday.

The Transportation Department called lawmakers' offices to alert them to the decision to suspend the program at midnight Thursday. The program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Once again, the reading comprehension on ET pales in comparison to kids in my daughter's 5th grade class.

There is such a backlog of deals that auto dealers "may already have surpassed the 250,000 vehicles bunded by the $1 billion program."

And last time I checked, the word suspend does not necessarily mean that the program has been (in your words), "cancelled".

They obviously need some time to get a handle on just how many vehicles are in the backlog.

Duh.
