Surprise...Canadians becoming more conservative

Quote from Ricter:

I'd rather see our taxes go up, just far enough to pay for a nuclear weapons program.

Are you being sarcastic? Why on Earth do we need a nuclear weapons program? I am far more content to reap the economic benefits of mining and producing the uranium alone.

if our taxes were were to decrease and govt were to shrink... you could get me to be fine with no govt sanction of marriage. Let it be a private matter.

Agreed.

of course health care contains cost benefit trade offs. I just think the ones we are making now suck and we should not think govt health care means better health care. I am concerned... giving govt more control over our lives is not going to work out in the long run.

There are plenty of easier more useful reforms like increasing competition and creating larger more powerful buyers groups.

We also need to ration taxpayer supplied health care.

Correct, universal healthcare does not equal better healthcare. But it does equal cheaper healthcare. Again, cost/benefit. As to the new Obamacare style system in the USA, I can't comment as I have not kept up with specifics. The cost/benefit trade-off in that instance very well may be a poor one.

We cant keep spending billions keeping premies alive who were spontaneously aborted just because we can. We have to look at outcomes... we have to acknowledge the fact that if people want extraordinary medical care they should pay cash or have private insurance.

In my opinion, the best option would be a sort of hybrid system, where everyone receives care on the taxpayers dime, but those who wish to expedite the process or receive special care have the option to do so by paying more money.

We cant hand out 10000 to 20000 dollar new hips to 80 something year olds who are too weak to move around much anyway. Again if grannie wants a new hip let her pay for it or have insurance.

I doubt you would feel the same way if you were that 80 year old granny.

I'm not being sarcastic (this time). Canada is little more than "kid brother" without nukes.

republicans arent trying to cut medicare spending. they are trying to eliminate medicare and force old people to buy private insurance from a market that does not exist. big difference.

So be it. We don't need nukes, it's a gigantic cost that will in all likelihood never get used.

We've done just fine up until this point with a comparitevly puny (yet incredibly tough) military.
