My reply to that rant is unequivocal, he can go f*** himself.
It's the typical rant of a conservative, if it ain't broke, don't fix it and with that logic we'd still be using polluting coal, we'd still have high emission vehicles, etc. without going into social conservative wishes to make my point.
Trucking companies and port operators have had to adjust and abide by CA emission standards since the 80s and are given plenty of time to adjust, by modifying their fleet or replacing older equipment to meet evolving standards. It's called cost of doing business; you plan the obsolescence and adjust your pricing accordingly.
CA is on the verge of requiring all trucks picking up at ports to be emission free, electric or alternative, which will have enormous consequences. You can imagine the level of push back from the trucking union mafia, port operators and equipment manufacturers, hiding behind the plight of thousands of indentured drivers working 12 hour days for 30k a year, mostly from poor countries and illegal, to challenge CARB rules.
The upgrades are expensive, even with subsidies, and replacing a truck may mean going out of business. But the fight shouldn't be against CARB, it should be to increase subsidies to meet the CARB requirements.
At the end of the day, non polluting trucks and port equipment is better for operators, people working around them and people living in the vicinity of all that.

Actually, if you read my past replies on this specific point, I have always said that unfortunately fossil fuels will remain the primary energy source to power our electric future, until non polluting alternatives connect to the grid to replace them. While it will be a gradual weaning, make no mistake, those countries that can will get all of their energy from non polluting sources.
It is physically impossible. Point blank.
The only way out of this mess is fusion, which is highly unlikely to ever be harnessed.
Energy-matter conversion rates/energy drain by this planet means we will require FF for the rest of our limited existence. Deal with it, babe.
