Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan.

Quote from mokwit:

Satellite makes sense if you are streaming thousands of symbols.

Not in the US. There isn't a sat provider in the US where you wouldn't be exceding your alloted bandwidth if you are always streaming thousands of symbols.

Maybe if the ONLY information you are getting about those symbols is the last price, it might be possible but even then I would question it....

Good point. Something I overlooked - still at the planning stages on this one.

This is an interesting article. I never thought satellite internet could ever be faster than Cable or DSL.

In some countries, their wireless broadband is already faster than most land broadband in USA.

Interesting. Is this a city wide type of service, where anyone in the city can pick up a signal? {Some U.S. cities are doing this now} or on a personal, private, in home network?

I remember when you were first able to connect the laptop to your cell phone. It would take two-three minutes to download a web page. Guys were going to the beach and trying to trade. They were losing more money paying $1.00 a minute, than they were on their super slow charting feeds. :)

it isn't.
The only thing that satelitte internet has over "terrestrial" (for lack of a better word) internet services is that the range of service is absolutely HUGE. For example, most of the US can be serviced from a single satellite (assuming the satelitte could handle the bandwidth). If you were to move hundreds of miles away, you could still just set back up and continue where you left off.

For everything else, satellite internet service will be worse. The only people who should even consider satellite service are people who don't care about latency and cannot get any other broadband service.

Thanks for the explanations, kinar. :)
