Yes, it is that simple. If CO2 levels go up 40% the earth WILL warm, all else being equal. There is little that would prevent that from happening and nothing is, thus the world is warming. CO2 acts as the earth's thermostat.

And yes,in the past rising temps caused CO2 to rise, because it outgasses as the ocean warms, then this outgassed CO2 leads to further warming in what is called a positive feedback loop.

Today, CO2 is rising because of man's emissions which is then causing warming.

So temps can lead CO2 and CO2 can lead temps.
