Study: Government Workers Make 78 Percent More Than Private Sector

Overpaid and under-worked bureaucrats are one of the main reasons why this Country's national debt is nearly 20 Trillion dollars. We've got the parasites on the bottom (welfare class) and the parasites on the top (Fortune 500/Government bureaucrats) who feast off the quickly vanishing middle. Apologists and government workers think their pay is some kind of social justice movement. They work soo hard. And it's a thankless job. Wah wah. Be a man. Make an honest living. Get a private sector job. They wont. They're spoiled children who make their living sucking off the taxpayer. Time to take the axe to their budget.

Employees for the federal government earn far more than their counterparts in the private sector, according to a new study by the Cato Institute.

Federal workers’ pay and benefits were 78 percent higher than private employees, who earned an average of $52,688 less than public sector workers last year.

The study found that federal government workers earned an average of $84,153 in 2014, compared to the private sector’s average of $56,350. Cato based its findings on figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

But when adding in benefits pay for federal workers, the difference becomes more dramatic. Federal employees made $119,934 in total compensation last year, while private sector workers earned $67,246, a difference of over $52,000, or 78 percent.

“Since the 1990s, federal workers have enjoyed faster compensation growth than private-sector workers,” according to the study, written by Chris Edwards, the director of tax policy studies at Cato. “In 2014 federal workers earned 78 percent more, on average, than private-sector workers. Federal workers earned 43 percent more, on average, than state and local government workers.

“The federal government has become an elite island of secure and high-paid employment, separated from the ocean of average Americans competing in the economy,” the Edwards wrote.

The report noted that 2.1 million people work for the federal government, costing over $260 billion in wages and benefits this year.

Cato, a libertarian think tank, praised the partial pay freeze implemented between 2011 and 2013 and suggested that the government should reduce the size of its workforce and trim its generous benefits.

Cato said average federal wages “grew rapidly for a decade” before the pay freeze, but began increasing again in 2014.

Any study that does not compare wages based on job role is worthless.

For example IT job role wages inside the Federal government are about 60% of the private sector for a similar role.

The majority of Federal jobs require a 4 year degree; the majority of private sector jobs do not. Comparing the average wage is absurd; like comparing apples and oranges.

Adjust for age, length of employment, level of education etc.. and there is really no difference between the private and public sectors. There is a study that goes into detail regarding this topic, you can google it.

Cato, now known as the Koch ammo shop, use to be a decent source of information....

I will agree that some previous Cato reports were well done and rich in details and facts.... this report on employment is not one of them. In fact, this report is pretty pathetic and undermines Cato as a source of information.

The fact that almost all government jobs are highly coveted and have many applicants for available positions tells you all you need to know about salary levels.

In the private sector higher pay based on age and years of employment are long gone.

Can you explain why so many Federal government jobs (as well as state & local) are unfilled for such long periods of time? In fact the time required to fill a government job is three times the amount of time in the private sector. I don't see federal jobs (except in D.C. itself) as highly coveted. In fact most need to be filled with contractors at much higher rates because no applicants can be found.

I certainly would not take a federal job in IT Security, the pay is 1/3 of the amount in the private sector market.

Of course I noticed that you didn't include productivity in your little list of adjustments. LOL

You couldn't. Or the whole 'adjustments' scam to justify the unjustifiable would fall apart.

You can google it.
