Stop paying credit cards. Give yourself a bailout!!

Quote from gnome:

Too bad people don't think ahead to, "What if I lose my job? What's to be done about my credit card balance?"

I understand carrying a credit card balance [big one, for many] is a way of life. But in my days as a financial planner, I used to counsel people to use CCs as a cash surrogate only unless there was no other choice.

I cut up quite a few credit cards of clients [used the biggest scissors I could find for drmatic effect] after they refi'd their house and paid the CCs off. Still, many just ran their balance up again..

I agree with you, but some of the people here are talking about using the cards as loans with intent to purposely default or another words commit fraud. If they think that it is ok to do that then good luck trying to convince them they should plan ahead and take responsibility for all their actions.

This thread has really helped me sort this out... obviously, people that live within their means are going to be happier probably. Some marriages are really screwed by a spender though, and the spouse is on the hook, maybe not technically but the money comes out of the household. Some, after it goes to collections will pay it off, others will game the system. I suppose that the ones that pay it off want to reestablish credit again after the record clears itself over time. The gamers cite the futility of paying off a loan after it goes to collections and I agree, it is futile but your outcome is good only if you reach statute of limitations. If you delay a long time, then finally they find you and serve you, it restarts the time period for the statute of lims... if you really never want credit again it's best to just dodge the collectors to the extent possible and hope for the best. Personally, I hate credit, the happiest times of my life were when I had no credit, currently I have no balances and am thinking of destroying the cards and closing all the accounts just to have one less thing to think about...

I suspect that the people here that have defaulted are a lot happier than the ones that are struggling with making the minimums, maybe all you strugglers should consider defaulting and then negotiating a payoff and just forgetting credit for a few years if not forever.. cash is king in this deflationary time really..

You can lower your amount/percentage on a CC by talking to them. They won't let you settle on 50c to the $1 unless you default around 120/150/180 days. At that point your credit is in the shitter for a few years.

It hardly seems worth it over $12k, maybe if you can jack six figures.

Although, it must be great to live in the UK. Freakin gangsters paradise. Make undeclared money, and live off the government. You would get pwn3d if you tried that in the USA though. You can't even get a utilities/cellphone/etc.. without a credit check and steep deposits with bad credit. I suppose if you jacked enough cash to begin with...

But with only $20000 living in govt. housing in England, you are unlikely to get laid without dipping into that $20k:) Reason enough to pay my bills.

I wonder if you people really trade. You should teach philosophy. Moral philosophy. I however gave the middle finger to CC.

This is a democracy.....(at least we are told so)........you dont care what the guy next door is doing......you care only about yourself. So?? smile for me brothers......dont hate me.

In a couple of months I will talk to them. The thing is that they raised the % to 29.99% on 12K. No way I will pay that anytime soon.

Unless they bring that s#### to at least 15%......I WONT PAY........WRITE IT DOWN.

Wow. That is a pretty absurd interest rate. Have you asked them to reduce it? Call and tell them you have been making good faith payments. But you cannot and are not able to pay that interest rate. Mention that high of a rate will force you to default. The don't want you to default, they might reduce it. I got Citi to reduce my interest from 14.99% to 9.99% just from asking them.

That sucks man, I honestly couldn't say that I would pay 30% interest on $12k either. That is insane. Can't you do a balance transfer to another CC?

Well,it looks like an overwhelming victory for the people v cc crooks. The people (with few exceptions) will pay their way,but refuse to be treated like suckers.Justice and common sense has prevailed, freedom and democracy is alive and well.
I would like to thank the op for sponsoring this thread.I would thank spanish for showing us he is the exception rather than the norm.I thank my wife, friends, family, all the peoples' champions here, that have worked so hard, and without renumeration, often in the face of unjustified personal attacks from the extremists.
Now it is time for the people to bring to justice the real crooks, the real thieves, the real corruptors of decency;the criminals who brought about this crisis.
Let us be ever vigilant against these oppressors, and their self appointed defenders, who seek to threaten our freedom.Never give up the fight.... god bless you and god bless America.

No, you gave the middle finger to your "brothers" who are paying their bills because guess who pays for your irresponsibility? Do you think the $12 that the CC company paid to the businesses where you charged your stuff just disappears? Democracy doesn't "entitle" you to be a deadbeat BTW...

Your own words say it all... no wonder you regard deadbeats and credit card cheats as heroes.

if the need arises in the future to screw the banks or anyone else for that matter,i won't hesitate and your opinion will be irrelevant.I see that as winning not losing geddit?
