Stock market indices

Hi, Someone told me that you can trade on stock market indices such as the Dow , SP500 and FTSE100 indices as there is a lot of movement in price. I am not quite sure about how to go about this. Could someone please help me and give me some information on how I can do this ?

Do a web search for Exchange Traded Funds or look at some threads here.

The DOW is traded as DIA, the S & P as SPY, FTSE100 I don't know off hand, it may be an Ishare.
